‘I Don’t Understand Your Metaphor’: Chris Coons Confused By John Roberts’ Reference to Camel Butt

Fox News’ John Roberts confused Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE) with a reference to an oldie-but-goodie from former President George W. Bush about hitting a “camel in the butt” with a $2 million missile.

Coons appeared on America Reports Thursday, when Roberts spoke about American retaliatory strikes in Syria.

“We have been striking in retaliation, weapons storage facilities, I don’t know if they’re bunkers or warehouses, but in the days after 9/11, George Bush famously said at a meeting, ‘I am not going to fire a $2 million missile at a $10 tent and hit a camel in the butt.’ But in essence, in response to these attacks against American forces in the Middle East, that appears to be what Biden is doing,” Roberts said.

A perplexed Coons responded, “John, I don’t understand your metaphor. This was not ‘a camel in a tent shot in his butt.’ It was an IRGC munitions depot that was struck by two US F15 fighters. And I do think the president is perfectly clear that we need to respond, we need to show the willingness and the determination to strike every time that there is a strike that causes injury, damage, loss of life, to American troops, contractors, facilities.”

Coons said he and a bipartisan group of congressmen met with President Joe Biden, where they discussed “the importance of deterring Iran.”

But Roberts wasn’t through with his camel metaphor.

“I guess we could quibble over whether a small munitions storage facility is equitable to hitting a camel in the butt, but certainly, the deterrent factor is about the same, because Iran doesn’t care,” Roberts said.

“Well, I’m not concerned with whether Iran cares or not,” Coons countered. “What I am concerned with is whether Iran continues to strike —”

“Well, they are!” Roberts interjected.

“John, could you let me finish my sentence, please? If they are taking additional strikes, I fully expect we will respond in kind, promptly,” Coons answered.
