During her Fox News interview this week, former First Lady Melania Trump blamed the mainstream media for calling her husband, former President Donald Trump, “a threat to democracy” who was “fueling a toxic atmosphere.” CNN’s Christiane Amanpour would like Mrs. Trump to take that back.

In a post on Twitter/X on Friday, Amanpour shared a link to a New York Times article about Mrs. Trump’s interview, but singled out her comments on the mainstream media, which were:

Is it really shocking that all this egregious violence goes against my husband, especially that we hear the leaders from the opposition party and mainstream media branding him as a threat to democracy, calling him vile names. They only fueling a toxic atmosphere and giving power all of these people that they want to do harm to him. This needs to stop. This needs to stop. The country needs to unite.

Mrs. Trump, who was promoting her upcoming memoir, also claimed that the mainstream media went “quiet” in the days following the assassination attempt on her husband in July, saying that she had “questions” about why. In an earlier video, she floated the possibility of conspiracy theories surrounding the attempts on the ex-president’s life.

But Amanpour roundly dismissed the notion that the mainstream media was responsible for stoking the rhetorical flames of political violence, writing: “Mrs Trump is mistaken, political violence is not the fault of the ‘mainstream media’ and I wish she would take back this false and dangerous accusation.”

Trump has regularly engaged in violent rhetoric against people who disagree with him since he first entered politics as a presidential candidate in 2015. As for being labeled a “threat to democracy,” Trump attempted to overturn the 2020 presidential election after he lost to President Joe Biden.
