Newsom Says He’ll Appoint Black Woman to Replace Sen. Feinstein, Who Hasn’t Offered to Resign
California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) said in an MSNBC interview that he would appoint a Black woman to replace Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D), who has not expressed any plans to resign.
“If Feinstein were to retire, will you nominate an African American woman to restore the seat that Kamala Harris is no longer in — in the United States Senate — and do you have a name in mind?” Reid asked Newsom in the Monday interview.
“We have multiple names in mind,” Newsom replied. “And the answer is yes.”
Feinstein, 87, joined the Senate in 1992, and won her sixth election 2018. While she is the chamber’s oldest member, she has not expressed any intention of leaving before her term ends in 2024.
Newsom appointed state Sen. Alejandro Padilla (D) in December to fill the seat vacated by Vice President Kamala Harris. California Reps. Karen Bass and Barbara Lee were also considered as possible replacements for Harris, and are likely to be on the list to succeed Feinstein that Newsom said he had in mind.
