GOP Senator Kennedy Mocks Benny Johnson’s ‘Leaked’ Leadership Whip Count: ‘It Has Senator Thune Actually Voting Against Himself’

Senator John Kennedy (R-LA) mocked right-wing provocateur Benny Johnson and others sharing a “leaked” whip count in the Republican leadership race during a Monday morning appearance on Fox News.

On Sunday night, Johnson purported to have an “EXCLUSIVE” whip count leaked to him.

“EXCLUSIVE: A GOP Senate Source has leaked the internal whip-count for the Leadership Vote. The final votes will be on a secret ballot Wednesday,” wrote Johnson before asserting that Senator John Thune (R-SD) boasted the support of 24 of his colleagues, while Senators John Cornyn (R-TX) and Rick Scott (R-FL) trailed him with 18 and 11 votes, respectively.

Further down in his post, Johnson included some evidence that his list might not be entirely accurate. Per his “reporting,” Thune is set shock the nation and vote for Cornyn, as numerous observers have pointed out.

After being asked if he has a preference for leader (Johnson’s list says he’s backing Cornyn), Kennedy mocked those touting it.

“Well, there is a there’s an official looking document floating around the internet that supposedly says here’s how every Republican senator would vote and who here’s who he or she would vote for, for for Senate majority leader. And in a in an unprecedented act of selflessness, it has Senator Thune actually voting against himself and for Senator Cornyn,” he observed. “If you think this list is real or accurate, then you probably think that Elvis is alive and running a small beach stand on Lake Erie. We haven’t even had a meeting yet to hear the formal proposals from the three nominees about how, if at all, they will run things differently than Senator [Mitch] McConnell.

“Here’s what I know,” concluded Kennedy. “We will pick a leader who will advance President Trump’s agenda. We saw what everybody else saw on Tuesday night. Here’s despite what the so-called experts in Washington say with their with their NPR tote bags and their organic broccoli, This was a really simple message from the people. Republicans aren’t perfect, but the other side is crazy. And President Trump is going to do things differently. And we will pick pick a leader who will help him do that.”
