Ben Carson Jokes: Nobody Listens to My Foreign Policy Ideas, Then Obama Uses Them
Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson said at a campaign event that nobody listens to his foreign policy ideas, and joked that even President Barack Obama uses them.
“If we take the fight to them over there, we’re much less likely to have to fight them over here,” Carson said in Davenport, Iowa, on Sunday, referring to the fight against ISIS.
“I find it a little frustrating — I say things like that, and nobody ever pays any attention. And they say, ‘Carson doesn’t know anything about foreign affairs,'” Carson said jokingly. “And yet, everybody picks up on all the stuff that I say, including President Obama, and start using it themselves. I think it’s very, very strange.”
It is unclear what exactly Carson was referring to, but Obama has been quick to criticize Carson and his fellow GOP candidates when given the opportunity. For example, after Carson suggested that ISIS could be destroyed “fairly easily,” Obama said Carson “doesn’t know much about” the situation.
Carson has come under scrutiny for his lack of foreign policy experience. The retired neurosurgeon once suggested that his sources are better than those of the Obama administration when it comes to his knowledge of China’s involvement in the Syria conflict. White House advisers said definitively that China is not involved in Syria, and Carson later backtracked.
The New York Times reported earlier this month that Duane Clarridge, who advises Carson on national security and intelligence issues, found it difficult to “make [Carson] smart” during foreign policy briefings.
