Bill Clinton Rips Trump’s ‘Endless Tributes to the Late, Great Hannibal Lecter’

Former President Bill Clinton tore into former President Donald Trump’s “endless tributes” to the fictional, cannibal serial killer Hannibal Lecter during his speech at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Wednesday.

After telling the audience he “almost croaked” at Trump’s claim that the United States was more respected under his leadership, Clinton said, “When you send a signal to other countries, you want them to know – whether they agree with you or not – at least that you’re on the level. That here’s where you are, what you believe.”

He then questioned, “What are they supposed to make to these endless tributes to the late, great Hannibal Lecter? I mean, President Obama once gave me the great honor of saying I was the explainer-in-chief. Folks, I’ve thought about it, and I don’t know what to say.”

Trump has repeatedly mentioned Lecter at his campaign rallies this election cycle, namedropping the fictional cannibal at almost every event, resulting in headlines such as, “Why is Donald Trump so obsessed with Hannibal Lecter?” and “Why is Donald Trump so Fixated on Hannibal Lecter?”

“The late, great Hannibal Lecter – he’s a wonderful man,” said Trump at one rally, while at another he asked the audience, “Did you ever hear of Hannibal Lecter, who’s a lovely man? He would love to have you for dinner. He will take you. Many people forget it.”

Trump has repeatedly mentioned Lecter in reference to claims that illegal immigrants from “insane asylums” were being brought into the United States under President Joe Biden’s watch.

“The press always says, ‘Why does he ramble about Silence of the Lamb?’ The late, great Hannibal Lecter. He’d like to have you over for dinner. Did you ever? Don’t do it,” warned Trump at a rally in June. “If he suggests, ‘I’d like to have you for dinner,’ don’t go. But these are the people– these are the people that are coming into our country and they are coming in numbers that nobody can believe.”

In July, Sir Anthony Hopkins, the actor who played Lecter in several movies, said he was “shocked and appalled” by Trump’s remarks.
