‘I Almost Croaked’: Bill Clinton in Awe of Trump’s Audacity in Claiming America Was More ‘Respected’ Under His Watch
Former President Bill Clinton said he could not believe former President Donald Trump claimed the world respected the United States while Trump was in the White House.
Clinton spoke at the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday night, where this week the party nominated Vice President Kamala Harris as its presidential nominee. She became the presumptive nominee last month after President Joe Biden stepped ended his reelection bid. Trump had largely centered his attacks on Biden’s age and cognitive decline, but Harris’s ascension to the top of the ticket has turned the tables, as Trump is now the oldest major party nominee in history. At one point, Clinton even noted to the DNC crowd on Wednesday that he is younger than Trump.
Elsewhere, he emphasized the need for global cooperation at dinged Trump.
“We need, still, to strengthen our alliances,” he said. “I almost croaked in the first debate of this election season when [former] President Trump said nobody respected America anymore like they did when he was president.”
The audience let out a collective chuckle.
“Wait, wait,” Clinton implored the crowd. “And with a straight face! Look, you have to give it to him. He’s a good actor. With a straight face, he cited as evidence of the respect that existed for us when he was there, the president of North Korea and Russia. I’d rather have the people who respect us now. And one of the things, when you send a signal to other countries, you want them to know – whether they agree with you or not – at least that you’re on the level.”
