Republican Virginia Senate candidate Hung Cao made a graphic remark about ripping out one’s own guts out and eating them during a debate with his opponent Sen. Tim Kaine (R-VA) on Wednesday.
Asked about the military’s struggle to meet its recruitment goals, and his previous claims that Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion policies were to blame for the decline in recruits, Cao said, “They kicked out tens of thousands of military people that refused to take a Covid vaccine. So if you’re a military person or a young person wanting to go in the military, would you trust the military or government that would turn your back on them just for an experimental vaccine?”
He continued:
When you’re using a, you know, drag queen to recruit for the Navy, that’s not the people we want. What we need is alpha males and alpha females who are going to rip out their own guts, eat them, and ask for seconds. Those are young men and women that are gonna win wars.
Cao – who has been endorsed by former President Donald Trump – received applause from the audience before it was quickly shut down by the moderator.
Asked for his thoughts on the issue, Kaine responded, “I didn’t understand my opponent’s argument. He went all around the block and I’m not really sure what his point was about DEI.”
He argued, “We have to reach out to new constituencies and new groups. We also have to convince people the benefits of military service are enormous. People feel like if they serve in the military, they’ll fall behind. No, you’ll zoom ahead because of benefits like the G.I. bill and others.”
Kaine concluded, “DEI is a red herring.”
During the debate, Cao also received a large reaction from the audience after he told Kaine, “There’s two truths in the world, okay? Never walk in a Target store wearing a red shirt and never go against an Asian when it comes to math. Trust me.”
