‘You Should Stop There’: Jeanine Pirro Admonishes Jesse Watters for Suggesting CEO Shooting Suspect Be Murdered in Prison
Monday’s episode of The Five on Fox News took a macabre turn when at least two co-hosts expressed support for killing the man arrested for allegedly shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson to death last week.
Thompson, 50, was shot outside his hotel in Manhattan on Wednesday. Police said shell casings at the scene featured the words “deny,” “defend,” and “depose” in what was perhaps a nod to a 2010 book titled Delay, Deny, Defend: Why Insurance Companies Don’t Pay Claims and What You Can Do About It.
The suspect fled the scene on a bike, and his whereabouts were unknown until Monday morning when police took 26-year-old Luigi Mangione into custody after he was spotted at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Reports indicate Mangione had back surgery and may suffer from chronic back pain. Authorities say the suspect had a manifesto slamming the health insurance industry. One passage allegedly states, “These parasites had it coming.”
Public reaction to Thompson’s killing has ranged from condemnatory to indifferent to downright celebratory. Those with little sympathy have noted that UnitedHealthcare has infamously used algorithms to deny customers’ care and has the highest denial rate of any health insurer.
Five co-host Harold Ford – the lone liberal at the table – slammed such critics and said Mangione should be executed by the state.
“What kind of society do we live in?” he lamented. “I can understand you disagreeing with the company’s policies. That doesn’t mean that you have the right, that anyone has the right to go and kill somebody. Now, this young guy right here, if indeed he’s the person, and they prosecute him… I hope he gets the death penalty.”
Jeanine Pirro interjected to note that New York does not have the death penalty.
“Well, maybe you can get him to get in there,” Ford replied. “Maybe you and [President-elect Donald] Trump can figure something out.”
Jesse Watters opined that Mangione should face “justice” in prison, perhaps suggesting the suspect be killed or perhaps sexually assaulted.
“This guy was obviously looking for notoriety. And good, he’s got it. Now, he’s a prep school kid. He’s politically connected in Maryland,” he said, alluding to the fact that Mangione is the cousin of a Maryland state delegate.
Brian Kilmeade interrupted to ask Watters if he thinks the suspect is ready to go to prison.
“I don’t think anyone’s ready, Brian,” Watters responded. “Maybe you are, Brian, in a different way. But this guy’s not ready. He’s way too soft. He’s gonna get annihilated on the inside, and good. If he’s not gonna get the death penalty, maybe someone will do him justice behind bars. That’s all I have to say about that.”
“You should stop there,” Pirro said.
“People say that a lot,” he replied.
