Sen. Katie Britt (R-AL) and Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) publicly called on Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to nominate President-elect Donald Trump’s daughter-in-law Lara Trump as the replacement for Marco Rubio’s soon-to-be-vacant Florida Senate seat, Tuesday.

After it was announced that Trump intended to pick Rubio to serve as secretary of State in the second Trump administration, speculation grew as to who would be appointed to replace Rubio’s seat in the Senate.

In an interview with Axios, Britt publicly backed Lara Trump, noting that she had “just got off a historic win” as the co-chair of the Republican National Committee, which catapulted Trump to victory against Vice President Kamala Harris.

“She understands the America First agenda,” said Britt. “For me, I think she would be a tremendous pick, a voice for hard working families and another mom of school aged kids that understands what we’re up against, and that’s to fight to protect the American dream.”

The suggestion was also endorsed by Congresswoman Luna, who called Trump “the best fit” to replace Rubio in the Senate.

“.@LaraLeaTrump needs to be the nominated replacement by @GovDeSantis for Rubio,” declared Luna on Tuesday. “She will keep the seat and avoid a messy primary for FLORIDA. Well spoken. Kicked butt on election integrity. Etc.”

The congresswoman added, “… and yes she had my total and complete endorsement if she is asked to do it.”

While Florida Politics publisher Peter Schorsch reported that a “well-placed source” said Lara Trump was “very much in the mix for US Senate appointment,” Bulwark reporter Marc Caputo claimed the “likeliest” replacement for Rubio would be DeSantis’ own chief of staff and former campaign manager James Uthmeier.

“DeSantis could then run in 2026 when his term ends,” Caputo noted.
