Fox Works Overtime to Connect Solar Eclipse to Border Issue: ‘A Rare Celestial Event Collides With a Policy Failure on the Ground’
With many of the major cable news outlets covering the impending solar eclipse, Fox News found its own unique angle: the United States’ southern border.
On Monday’s episode of America’s Newsroom, anchor Dana Perino noted how the path of totality — where parts of the country will be cloaked in darkness during the eclipse — will include part of the U.S.-Mexico border. She then took the opportunity to criticize the current administration for its handling of immigration.
“A rare celestial event collides with a policy failure on the ground,” Perino said. “The southern border will be directly in the path of totality today when the moon covers the sun for nearly four minutes.”
Then, the show went to reporter Bill Melugin in Eagle Pass, Texas. There, Melugin explained what people would be seeing while they’re not looking up at the sky.
“Take a look at this video from nearby New Mexico,” Melugin said as the broadcast played footage of migrants crossing the border, “which is seeing a surge illegal alien evaders and ‘got-aways.’ Our team shot this over the weekend in Sunland Park, New Mexico. You’ll see illegal immigrants dressed in dark clothing — sometimes camouflage — actively trying to sneak into the United States as suspected cartel scouts and coyotes watch from a mountain above.”
