Baseball Star Trevor Bauer Speaks for First Time Since Sexual Assault Settlement
In his first television interview since settling a sexual assault case, star pitcher Trevor Bauer opened up about both the case and his future in the MLB.
Bauer announced in October that he reached a settlement with Lindsey Hill, the woman who accused him of assault in 2021. The pitcher filed a defamation suit in response, and she then filed a countersuit. After refusing multiple offers from Hill’s team to settle the suit financially, Bauer announced the two sides came to an agreement with neither one paying anything. He revealed a number of texts and photos that seemingly indicated a deliberate attempt by Hill to frame Bauer.
Other women, however, have also come out and accused Bauer of assault.
On Thursday, Bauer sat down with Fox News anchor Bill Hemmer on America’s Newsroom. He maintained his innocence in the case, and vowed to “prevail” in the other ones.
“I’ve never sexually assaulted anyone, never will, never have,” Bauer said. “It’s not who I am as a person. It’s been excruciating the last two-and-a-half years being seen that way because that’s not my character. I’ve never sexually assaulted anyone.”
“Some of those things are still playing out, but we will prevail in all of those. There’s one outstanding lawsuit, but we’re gonna win that just like we’ve won everything else.”
Looking back, Bauer expressed regret for the way he handled scrutiny in the aftermath of the allegations. He attributed his response to being bullied as a child.
“I made a lot of people in the media mad,” he said. “I was very immature with how I handled things when people would write things about me that I didn’t agree with. I should’ve just had a private, adult conversation with someone. I was bullied a lot as a kid — and I don’t really wanna get into that — but at the time, I viewed my responses on social media as like standing up for myself and having a voice, and I think that was just immature.”
After serving a 194-game suspension from the MLB, Bauer was reinstated. No team chose to sign him, so he played a season in Japan. He still has hopes to rejoin the North American league.
“I’d love to play baseball,” he said. “That’s my goal, to play baseball here in the United States. I’m still one of the best pitchers in the world. I’d like to compete at the highest level.”
“I’m also really passionate about helping people, being good for the game. I think I’ve done a lot of damage, unfortunately, in the first half of my career; and I’d love a second opportunity to do things better.”
