‘You Can’t Make It Up’: Cuomo Mocks Trump’s Unity Message After Ex-President Calls Critic ‘Scum’
NewsNation host Chris Cuomo cut away from a rally held by Donald Trump to remark on the president’s comments about a prominent critic.
Speaking at a rally in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on Monday, Trump made the case for a second term the day before polls open on election day. Trump went off script to take shots at Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), who was one of Trump’s loudest critics during his administration. Schiff was also an impeachment manager in the ex-president’s first impeachment trial. After Trump’s presidency, Schiff served on the House Jan. 6 committee, which investigated Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election.
“You think of all the different things that we did,” Trump told rally-goers. “We were respected all over the world. China respected us. Everybody respected us. There was no laughing at your leader. They came up with all these hoaxes. Adam Schiff and all this scum that we have in this country. They’re scum, and they knew it was a hoax.”
Trump went on to call Schiff “one of the truly unattractive people. I call him Watermelon Head. He’s got the largest head and the smallest neck. He’s got a neck that’s about four inches around. He’s got a watermelon on top of him. But he’s not a stupid person, but he’s an evil kind of person.”
Cuomo interrupted the feed of the rally to offer some commentary.
“In the category of ‘you can’t make it up,’ former President Trump, on the eve of the election, saying people who divide are no good,” he said. “And that is literally all he’s doing, is criticizing anyone who doesn’t support him.”
Trump has been fixated on Schiff’s appearance. In July, called him a “very unattractive guy” and threw in the “watermelon head” crack for good measure.
