Here We Go Again: Marjorie Taylor Greene Introduces New Censure Resolution Against Rashida Tlaib
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) hasn’t given up on her goal to have Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) censured for “antisemitic activity,” even though the House rejected Greene’s similar resolution last week.
Tlaib is the only Palestinian American member of Congress, and has loudly called for a total ceasefire of the Israel-Hamas war that has reportedly killed 10,000 Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip.
Greene took to the House floor Monday to reintroduce her censure resolution, by citing several Tlaib tweets that promoted the Hamas slogan, “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.” That slogan “calls for the genocide of all Jews,” Greene said.
Tlaib has insisted the slogan is “an aspirational call for freedom, human rights, and peaceful coexistence, not death, destruction, or hate” — but even several of her fellow Democrats have been unconvinced.
Greene also accused Tlaib of inciting “an illegal occupation at the United States Capitol complex” that endangered “members of Congress, their staffs, and Capitol visitors.”
Tlaib has been criticized by other members of Congress for her outspoken views and for displaying the Palestinian flag outside her office even after the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel.
The Michigan lawmaker released a statement shortly before the vote on Nov. 1:
Marjorie Taylor Greene’s unhinged resolution is deeply Islamophobic and attacks peaceful Jewish anti-war advocates. I am proud to stand in solidarity with Jewish peace advocates calling for a ceasefire and an end to the violence. I will not be bullied, I will not be dehumanized, and I will not be silenced. I will continue to call for ceasefire, for the immediate delivery of humanitarian aid, for the release of hostages and those arbitrarily detained, and for every American to be brought home. I will continue to work for a just and lasting peace that upholds the human rights and dignity of all people, and ensures that no person, no child has to suffer or live in fear of violence.
The first censure attempt lost with the help of 23 Republicans who aligned themselves with Democrats. Greene denounced those Republicans, saying, “They censured Adam Schiff so they should be able to vote to censure her. Terrorist Tlaib should be expelled but let’s see if we can at least censure her.”
