Joy Reid Says Trump Backing IVF Is Empty and Desperate Effort To ‘Stay Out of Prison’
MSNBC’s Joy Reid accused former President Donald Trump of backing IVF treatments and promising that the government will eventually pay for them is a desperate play to “stay out of prison.”
During a Friday panel discussion on Trump’s latest comments on IVF, Reid argued voters need to look at Trump in the same vein as Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Both men are political figures navigating legal woes. Netanyahu was indicted in 2020 on charges of fraud, bribery, and more, and the case has dragged on for years as Netanyahu has delayed proceedings, citing his work leading Israel’s war against the terror group Hamas.
Trump is meanwhile awaiting sentencing, which will be September 18, in his hush money case where he was found guilty of falsifying business records to conceal hush money payments meant to cover up an affair.
Both men are desperate to stay out of prison, Reid said.
“People need to start thinking about Donald Trump the way they think about Benjamin Netanyahu who is the equivalent of him in Israel, who will do whatever his far-right backers want, including killing a lot of people in Gaza,” she said.
Netanyahu, Reid claimed, has the same motivation to remain in office to keep a level of protection against prosecution.
“He, too, is trying to stay out of prison,” she said.
During a Michigan rally, Trump said that his policy in his second term would be for the government to pay for IVF treatments or for there to be a mandate that health insurance companies need to pay. The new position comes amidst a pushback against the treatments from some pro-life conservatives. Trump previously came out against a ruling in Alabama that would have effectively ended IVF. Evangelicals at the Southern Baptist Convention also voted in July to oppose the treatments.
Reid dismissed Trump’s support as empty.
“This man is not a policy wonk. He didn’t do policy in his first term. He just let The Heritage Foundation and whatever the think tankers do what they would think was popular,” she said, adding, “He doesn’t want to go to prison. He would spend the rest of his life in prison.”
