Viral Video Of Kamala Harris VP Pick Tim Walz Was Deceptively Edited — Here’s The Full Uncut Version
A viral video of Kamala Harris VP pick Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) was deceptively edited and rocketed around conservative media — but the full video tells a different story.
Vice President and presumptive Democratic nominee for president Kamala Harris has been crisscrossing the country with her new VP pick this week, even as he faces attacks from opponents and scrutiny of statements he made about his military service.
In a resurfaced clip that has been seized on by Walz critics, he says “There’s no guarantee to free speech on misinformation or hate speech, and especially around our democracy”:
I think we need to push back on this. There’s no guarantee to free speech on misinformation or hate speech, and especially around our democracy.
That abbreviated clip has racked up millions and millions of views from viral tweets and coverage on conservative blogs. It’s from a December 29, 2022 edition of MSNBC’s The ReidOut, with Maria Teresa Kumar filling in as host, and is being used to paint Walz as ignorant of the U.S. Constitution.
Tim Walz is on record saying “there’s no guarantee to free speech” for what he deems misinformation or hate speech.
Free speech should pursue truth, but @InezFeltscher says our founders emphatically rejected the argument Walz is making.

But the full exchange makes clear that Kumar and Walz were discussing specific issues of voter intimidation and misinformation about polling places:
MARIA TERESA KUMAR: And I want to just before I ask you another question, I want to talk about what you just mentioned about misinformation, because oftentimes before in previous political chapters, disinformation, telling people were to vote the wrong way. That was kind of these were called considered shenanigans, but it’s becoming more ominous. Can you talk a little bit about that and what you do to ensure that there are penalties for that?
GOV. TIM WALZ: Yeah. Years ago it was the little things, telling people to vote the day after the election. And, you know, we kind of brushed them off.
Now we know it’s intimidation at the at the ballot box. It’s it’s undermining the idea that, mail in ballots aren’t, legal.
I think we need to push back on this. There’s no guarantee of free speech on misinformation or or hate speech, and especially around our democracy. Tell the truth where the voting places are, who can vote, who’s able to be there?
And I, you know, watching some states, continue to weaken the protections around the ballot, I think, is what inspiring us to to lean into this.
