‘It Could Happen to Anyone’: Nathan Wade Says ‘Workplace Romance’ with Fani Willis ‘As American as Apple Pie’
Former Trump special prosecutor Nathan Wade described his “workplace romance” with Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis as “American as apple pie” on Wednesday and argued it could have happened to anyone.
Asked by MSNBC host Joy Reid whether he had started a “personal intimate relationship” with Willis before he was brought on as a special prosecutor in the Georgia case against former President Donald Trump, Wade replied, “Absolutely not. Absolutely not.”
He continued:
Our relationship was professional. Our relationship grew organically over time. It was something that was not deliberate or intentional. I made the statement earlier that workplace romances are as American as apple pie, right? That was not to make light of the situation. That was just to say that it could happen to anyone. Of course, we’re not speaking in extremes, it doesn’t happen to everyone, but it’s a thing that happens. It’s a thing that happened to us.
Wade – who resigned from the case in March after admitting to his workplace romance with Willis – argued, “I felt like we dealt with it in a manner that was professional. We kept our personal lives personal and private, and I still believe that it had no place in the courtroom, not now and not then.”
He went on to claim that he and Willis were “the best of friends” after their brief romance and that they still “communicate daily.”
Wade previously described his workplace romance as “as American as apple pie” earlier this month during an interview with ABC News.
“Workplace romances are as American as apple pie,” he said at the time. “It happens to everyone. But it happened to the two of us.”
Asked whether he regretted the fling, Wade replied, “I regret that that private matter became the focal point of this very important prosecution.”
