Ex-Trump Voter Makes Succinct Case Against the Ex-President: ‘He Tried to Overthrow Our Government – And That’s a Problem’
A Republican voter and military veteran who cast his ballot for Donald Trump told CNN he will not vote for the former president again because, he noted, Trump tried to overthrow the republic.
CNN’s John King traveled to Pennsylvania, where he interviewed people in the swing state who voted for Nikki Haley in the Republican presidential primary.
None of the voters King spoke with like their choices in November’s election, which will feature a 2020 rematch between Trump and President Joe Biden. After losing that contest, Trump falsely claimed the election was rigged against him. In the weeks after losing, Trump vainly tried to pressure Republican officials in states he lost to subvert the results. When that failed, he urged Vice President Mike Pence to void the election while presiding over its certification in Congress. After a mob of his supporters stormed the Capitol and demanded Pence be hanged, Trump watched it unfold on TV while ignoring pleas for help.
It is for this reason that Bucks County voter Michael Pesce said he cannot vote for Trump.
“I became a Republican when I turned 18 because of Ronald Reagan,” Pesce told King in a CNN report that aired on Wednesday. “Both my parents were staunch Democrats.”
Pesce said that while he does not like the candidates, he already knows who will get his vote:
KING: So, in 2016, you voted for?
PESCE: Trump.
KING: And in 2020?
PESCE: Biden.
KING: And you’ve got an election in a few months. What are you gonna do?
PESCE: If I had my choice, I wouldn’t vote for either. But I will vote for Biden. I will vote for anyone but Trump.
KING: Why?
PESCE: Well, so, he tried to overthrow our government – and that’s a problem with me. I served in the U.S. military. I just have very strong feelings about what it means to be an American… I want other Republicans out there saying like, “We don’t have to choose this guy.” They don’t want to hear that, ok, he could be a convicted criminal in a couple of days. They don’t want to hear that, hey, he did all these things.
