CNN’s Harry Enten Blows Up ‘Narrative’ That Americans Hate Their Health Care: They’re ‘Pretty Gosh Darn Satisfied’
CNN’s Harry Enten blew up the “narrative” that Americans hate their health care during an appearance on CNN Wednesday.
Luigi Mangione’s assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson last week has sparked a number of debates over the U.S. health care system and health insurance industry, with some even suggesting that Mangione — and those who have celebrated his actions — are justified.
“Correcting a narrative from some… Yes, it’s true that Americans think the health care system in this country is bad on quality, coverage & cost…,” observed Enten while promoting the segment on X. “But Americans LIKE their OWN health care. They are satisfied with their costs & think the quality & coverage is excellent/good.”
“So how do Americans feel about health care, their health care, the country’s health care in general? Certainly been in the news lately,” said John Berman to kick things off. “With us now, CNN senior data reporter Harry Enten. It’s actually a fairly complicated question, depending on which one you ask.”
“We talk about the health care system in this country. Look, the bottom line is Americans really don’t like it, some might even say they hate it. Talk about is the quality of the health care in this country excellent or good? Just 44% say it’s excellent or good. Look at the coverage, look at the coverage. Twenty-eight percent say that the coverage is excellent or good,” said Enten, seemingly validating the narrative he set out to disprove.
“But there’s a difference between the health care and their health care,” said Berman, prompting Enten.
“You know, sometimes we talk about approval of Congress versus approval of your own congressman. People don’t like Congress, but they like their own congressmen. Something similar is going on here when you talk about the nation’s health care system, or the health care in the nation, versus your own health care, your own health care,” replied Enten. “Look at this, excellent or good, the quality of it, 71% say it’s excellent or good. How about the coverage of it? Sixty-five percent say that their coverage is excellent or good. How about satisfied with the cost? A majority, 58%, say that they’re satisfied with the cost. So the bottom line is this: You wonder why the health care system of this country stays the same. It’s because people don’t like health care in sort of the abstract. But when it comes to their own health care, a lot of Americans actually are pretty gosh darn satisfied.”
Enten even went on to show that even a majority of adults who make less than $50,000 a year are satisfied with the quality, coverage, and cost of their own health care.
