CNN’s Harry Enten Flags Key Signs of Impending Trump Victory: ‘You Can’t Say You Weren’t Warned’
CNN senior political data reporter Harry Enten flagged several signs indicating that former President Donald Trump may defeat Vice President Kamala Harris in the presidential election on Wednesday, even going so far as to call it an “obvious” outcome.
Enten joined CNN anchor John Berman to break down the factors working in Trump’s favor just days out from the election. Enten also teased that he would try to make a similar argument for the other side in a segment later this week.
The first major problem for Democrats, according to Enten, is voters’ satisfaction with the direction of the country. From an aggregate of polls, Enten noted that since the 1980 presidential election, incumbent parties that have won reelection average around 42% approval when it comes to the direction of the country. When incumbent parties lose, Enten explained, the average has been around 25%. The current average, according to Enten, is 28%.
“So the bottom line is very few Americans think the country is on the right track at this particular point. It tracks much more with when the incumbent party loses than with [when] it wins. In fact, I went back through history, there isn’t a single time in which 28% of the American public thinks the country is going on the right track in which the incumbent party actually won,” Enten said.
Another factor working in Republicans’ favor is that they are outpacing Democrats in registering voters, signing people up in “big, huge numbers,” as Enten put it. The data journalist reported Republicans have been gaining massive amounts of ground in battleground states like Arizona, Nevada, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania.
If Trump does win, Enten declared, no one can say they were not “warned” of the possibility.
“Republicans are putting more Republicans in the electorate, the Democratic number versus the Republican number has shrunk, and so the bottom line is if Republicans win come next week, Donald Trump wins come next week, the signs all along will have been obvious,” he said. “We would look at the right direction being very low, Joe Biden’s approval rating being very low, and Republicans really registering numbers. You can’t say you weren’t warned.”
CNN’s Kate Bolduan told her colleague Enten after the report that he’s sometimes a “very scary man” with his “delivery” after he painted Trump’s path to victory.
“It’s not even the content, but sometimes Harry’s delivery is very — it’s very scary,” she joked. “You’re a very scary man.”
