Justin Trudeau Takes ‘Veiled Swipe’ at Trump After Being Called ‘Governor’ of the ‘State’ of Canada
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau complained Tuesday that the Americans voted to elect Donald Trump over a female candidate for the second time in eight years.
Trudeau did not mention Trump by name but his comments were delivered hours after Trump implied Canada was not a sovereign country in a social media post in which he called the country’s leader a “governor.”
According to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Trudeau was speaking in Ottawa for an organization that seeks to elevate women to elected office when he addressed the 2024 election.
“We were supposed to be on a steady, if difficult, march towards progress. And yet, just a few weeks ago, the United States voted for a second time to not elect its first woman president,” Trudeau said.
The prime minister added, “Women’s rights and women’s progress is under attack – overtly and subtly. I want you to know that I am, and always will be, a proud feminist. You will always have an ally in me, and in my government.” The CBC’s John Paul Tasker wrote of the remarks:
The comments could be interpreted as a thinly veiled swipe at U.S. president-elect Donald Trump. In his first term, Trump appointed Supreme Court justices who were intent on overturning abortion jurisprudence — something they ultimately did with the Dobbs vs. Jackson Women’s Health decision.
Harris’s loss in the November election frustrated the hopes of Americans who wanted to see a woman in the Oval Office for the first time.
On His Truth Social account early Tuesday morning, Trump insulted Trudeau while discussing trade.
“It was a pleasure to have dinner the other night with Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social account at just after midnight Tuesday. “I look forward to seeing the Governor again soon so that we may continue our in depth talks on Tariffs and Trade, the results of which will be truly spectacular for all!”
