Jim Acosta Absolutely Flummoxed By Trump Assassination Claims: ‘I Can’t Believe The Words That Are Coming Out Of My Mouth’
CNN’s Jim Acosta was positively flummoxed with just how far Donald Trump has taken the “assassination” fantasy he spent all night raging about on Truth Social.
Trump has added to the false MAGA claim that the FBI raid on Mar-a-Lago resort to find classified documents was actually an assassination attempt authorized by President Joe Biden himself. The latest version now has Biden’s FBI ready to take out Trump’s Secret Service detail, along with the former president.
Acosta fact-checked the claim, saying, “Authorizing the use of deadly force during an FBI check is standard protocol. In fact, the search of President Biden’s home included the exact same provision.”
Acosta said that Trump is now fundraising off of the false claim: “In an email titled, ‘They were authorized to shoot me!’ — Yes, that’s what it says — Trump’s campaign falsely claimed that Biden was, quote, ‘Locked and loaded, ready to take me out.’
Acosta introduced his guests, CNN political commentators Van Jones and Geoff Duncan before continuing:
ACOSTA: There are times when I’m reading the teleprompter and I can’t believe the words that are coming out of my mouth. And, this is one of those cases because, it almost seems foolish to say, “Van, what do you think about that?” I mean, obviously, it just boggles the mind.
JONES: Well, it’s very dangerous. We can kind of put it in a cartoon, nonsense from Donald Trump. But what he’s doing is consistently undermining the American public’s faith in America’s government. America’s government is not authorizing anybody to kill Donald Trump, but you start putting these conspiracies out there over and over again — this is termite politics. You are eating into the foundational confidence of the people in the government.
Acosta next turned to Geoff Duncan, former Republican lieutenant governor of Georgia.
“Obviously, people believe this stuff otherwise they wouldn’t put it in a fundraising email,” Acosta said.
“It’s par for the course with Donald Trump,” Duncan said. “We watched this play out with the 2020 election cycle. We watched this play out over and over again. And, quite honestly, it’s one of the reasons that I, as a livelong Republican have decided to change my support, to support Joe Biden…because we cannot take four more years of this chaos and lie and willingness to just do anything to remain in power.”
