Arizona Subpoenas Trump Co-Defendant and Ex-Campaign Aide In 2020 ‘Fake Electors’ Probe
Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes (D) subpoenaed a former Trump campaign aide and Georgia co-defendant on Tuesday as part of the state’s probe into Trump’s so-called 2020 “fake electors” scheme in that state.
ABC broke the news that Michael Roman had been subpoenaed, citing a “source familiar with the matter.”
Mayes’s office has previously made public that she is investigating the scheme to replace legitimate electors for Joe Biden with a slate of electors for Donald Trump in an effort to overturn the outcome in the state in the 2020 election.
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has indicted Trump and 18 co-defendants over a similar effort in Georgia. While some of Trump’s co-defendants have accepted plea agreements, the criminal charges against Trump are still awaiting trial.
“We will announce something in the relatively near future,” Mayes has said of her investigation.
ABC News also noted that former Trump lawyer Kenneth Chesebro has spoken to the Arizonna investigators.
Chesebro “sat for an interview with investigators in Arizona in recent weeks, sources also told ABC News. Chesebro was indicted in the Georgia investigation and took a deal with prosecutors, changing his plea to guilty to a single felony charge and agreeing to cooperate.”
Attorneys general in Michigan and Nevada have already indicted pro-Trump “fake electors” over their efforts to place Biden electors in order to switch the results of the elector count in 2020.
Mayes spoke about her investigation back in November, saying, “We’re going to make sure that we do it on our timetable, applying the resources that it requires to make sure that justice is done, for not only Arizonans, but for the entire country.”
