CNN’s Elie Honig Says ‘Ugly’ Trump Case Ruling ‘Pretty Close To The Best’ Fani Willis Could Expect

CNN legal analyst Elie Honig said the “ugly” decision on disqualifying Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis from former President Donald Trump’s election crimes trial is “pretty close to the best” Willis could expect.

Willis faced disqualification over the accusation that she financially benefited from her relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade and this constituted a fatal conflict of interests — all of which Willis denied.

Judge Scott McAfee issued a ruling on Friday that allows DA Willis to remain on the case if Wade steps aside, but which also includes damning statements about Willis.

On Friday’s edition of CNN News Central, anchor Kate Bolduan asked if this was the “best” ruling for the prosecution, and Honig said it was “pretty close”:

KATE BOLDUAN: Is this? This isn’t the best that — this isn’t the best ruling that Fani Willis could have gotten. Or is this the best ruling?

ELIE HONIG: It’s pretty close to the best!

JOHN BERMAN: I just want to make sure that we’re making clear to people.

ELIE HONIG: Yeah. If I’m the DA, I am breathing a heavy sigh of relief right now because this language. Yet we will see it in the media and maybe the jury pool will see it. You can filter that out later, but they have survived. Your goal here is to survive and carry on with the case.

I mean, this ruling is ugly. I mean, it is, if I’m the DA, I’m reading this ruling, I’m breathing a sigh of relief, but I’m also cringing at some of the language the judge has put out there.

But but the number one goal is keep the case alive and stay on the case, and that the DA has survived. Here’s what could have been worse, Kate. Here’s what it would have been, I mean, what could have been slightly better, excuse me.

The judge could have said, “I find no impropriety here. I find the evidence presented by the defendants entirely unconvincing. They failed to carry on their burden, carry on with the case.” The judge has not done that. He has found, I wouldn’t say a midpoint. It’s not 50/50, but he has given the defendant certain concessions.
