Nexstar Hires Bill Sammon, News Veteran Ousted By Fox Over Trump Election Loss
Bill Sammon, a veteran journalist who served for years as managing editor of Fox News’s Washington bureau, is joining Nexstar Media Group as a senior vice president of editorial content for its website The Hill and network NewsNation.
Sammon was ousted from Fox News following the 2020 presidential election and the sharp backlash it received from Donald Trump and his supporters for calling the state of Arizona for Joe Biden. Sammon worked with the team that made the early but ultimately correct call.
Sammon will report to Cherie Grzech, the president and managing editor for news and politics at NewsNation, according to a Nexstar press release. Bob Cusack, meanwhile, will remain editor in chief of The Hill.
“Mr. Sammon brings nearly 40 years of experience as a journalist and broadcast news leader to his new role with The Hill and NewsNation. He started his journalism career in his hometown of Cleveland, working as an investigative reporter for The Plain Dealer newspaper,” said Nexstar in a statement announcing the move, adding:
In 1995, he moved to Europe to become a war correspondent for The Stars and Stripes, covering conflicts in Bosnia and Iraq. In 1997, Mr. Sammon relocated to Washington, D.C., and spent a decade as a White House correspondent for several newspapers, including The Washington Times. Mr. Sammon has written six books on the presidency, four of which became New York Times bestsellers.
Sammon spent election night 2024 as the liaison between Decision Desk HQ and NewsNation, where Mediaite founder Dan Abrams also hosts a prime time show. DDHQ was by far the most bullish results forecaster on election night and NewsNation political editor Chris Stirewalt called Sammon the network’s “secret weapon” in quickly and accurately calling the races that night.
