Veteran NBC journalist Andrea Mitchell announced at the end of her Tuesday show that she would take on a different role after the presidential inauguration in January 2025.

Mitchell said that she would be moving on from her anchoring duties at MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell Reports to take on a wider reporting-focused role at NBC News. She told Jeremy Barr of The Washington Post in an interview on Tuesday that she “wrestled with this for a long time.”

Mitchell added that it was a “tough decision,” but made it very clear that she was not retiring from the network where she has worked since 1978. Mitchell will continue to serve in her role as NBC’s chief foreign affairs correspondent and chief Washington correspondent:

Mitchell, 77, said she was motivated by a desire to do more of the on-the-ground reporting that has made her one of the most recognized journalists in television news for nearly five decades. Among other big stories, she hopes to do reporting in Ukraine, which she said is best covered with several months on the ground; in Cuba, which she has covered extensively, including interviews with Fidel Castro; and in Darfur, Sudan, a trip she hasn’t yet pitched to her bosses.

“It’s going to be such a big adventure for me,” she said. “I think it’s going to be good for everybody. And I’m really excited about what I can do.”

President of editorial at NBC News Rebecca Blumenstein said of Mitchell’s move: “Being an anchor is pretty time-consuming. It’s time that she doesn’t have to be doing reporting that can resonate across NBC.”

Andrea Mitchell Reports has been part of the MSNBC daytime lineup for 16 years.
