Daily Show Skewers Trump’s TV Host Cabinet: ‘Saw Me in a Reverse Mortgage Ad on Fox News and Here I Am’
The Daily Show skewered President-elect Donald Trump’s cabinet picks with a mock orientation video introducing ex-TV hosts to their new jobs.
Trump’s nominations include a number of folks who have spent time working in cable news. Fox & Friends Weekend co-host Pete Hegseth, also a combat veteran, was nominated as Secretary of Defense; Fox Business host Sean Duffy, a former congressman, as Transportation Secretary; former Dr. Oz host Dr. Mehmet Oz as Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator; and former Fox News host Mike Huckabee, also a former governor, as ambassador to Israel.
Daily Show correspondent Grace Kuhlenschmidt starred in a skit for the show in which she played “Deborah Malone,” whose job it is to introduce everyone to their new roles in the administration. She says at one point she was chosen to serve in the administration because Trump caught her on a “reverse mortgage ad” on Fox News.
“If you’re watching this, you’re a random television personality who Donald Trump just appointed to run a huge federal agency. Right now you might be wondering: how did I get this job? So I’m just in charge now? And, wait, what is my job again?” she said. “Well, I can assure you the answer to these questions is I don’t fucking know. I also was appointed to my job without knowing what it is. Trump saw me on a reverse mortgage ad on Fox News and here I am. It’s totally fucked.”
The self-identified “Secretary of Internal Communications” offered two pieces of advice to the onslaught of TV hosts.
“We’re all in the same boat, even if that boat is the Titanic,” she said.
The final bit of advice was to not sweat it because chances are somebody will be worse at their role than you are at yours, singling out vaccine skeptic Robert F. Kennedy Jr. The former independent presidential candidate has been nominated by Trump to serve as Health and Human Services Secretary.
“More than likely, someone else will fuck up worse than you like RFK. I’m pretty dumb, but that guy is dumb,” she said.
