David Axelrod Says Trump and Musk Need to ‘Get Together and Decide Who the President Is’

David Axelrod mocked President-elect Donald Trump and Elon Musk over the chaos and dysfunction the two caused on Wednesday.

Early Wednesday morning, Musk sent the first of dozens of tweets blasting a stopgap funding bill that would avert a government shutdown set to begin on Dec. 14 and fund the government through March 14. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) unveiled the continuing resolution on Tuesday, and many hardline Republicans rebelled against it. Amid Musk’s tweetstorm, Trump fired off a few missives against the legislation. Shortly thereafter, Republican leadership pulled the bill.

On Wednesday’s AC360 on CNN, guest host Jim Sciutto asked Axelrod, “Who stands to lose the most from a potential shutdown?”

“It’s pretty clear that they were about to pass the bill, and Musk intervened, and Trump followed him,” the Democratic consultant replied. “And now we’re headed into this crisis period.”

Axelrod then advised viewers to “strap on their seatbelts” for the coming fight in Congress before noting that in their broadsides against the bill, Musk and Trump were saying contradictory things.

“What was confusing to me is Musk sends out one of his tweets, and he says no one should do anything until January 20th when Trump gets there,” he noted. “Trump sends out a tweet saying they ought to pass a clean, a clean [continuing resolution]… So they seem to be saying different things, and eventually they’re gonna have to get together and decide who the president is.”

The crack prompted former Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) to laugh. Earlier in the segment, Kinzinger referred to Musk as “President Elon.”
