‘That’s Not Even a Question’: Republican Ex-Congressman Says He’d Vote for Biden Over Trump ‘In a Heartbeat’
Former Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) said he will vote for President Joe Biden if he faces former President Donald Trump in a rematch this year.
Kinzinger has been one of Trump’s most prominent conservative critics, but he remains a Republican despite Trump’s hammerlock on the GOP. The former lawmaker said in November he would support former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie in the Republican primary.
“I like Chris Christie. I would support Chris Christie because he’s telling the truth,” Kinzinger said at the time. “And I think, for me, anybody that tells the truth, that’s important at this moment.”
Christie suspended his campaign on Wednesday, just hours before former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis debated on CNN. As he has done with all the debates, Trump boycotted it. He remains the clear frontrunner in the race.
Appearing on Thursday’s edition of The Source, Kinzinger was asked what’s next.
“You had said previously that you thought Chris Christie was telling the truth, that you liked him and supported him,” noted host Kaitlan Collins. “Obviously, he has dropped out, suspended his campaign yesterday. What are you gonna do now?”
“Nothing,” he said. “Look, I think it’s highly likely that it’s gonna be Biden against Trump. And in that case, there is no question who I would support. I believe in America way more than I believe in the Republican Party. I don’t really believe in the Republican Party at the moment. I hope Nikki wins New Hampshire. I hope that leads to some momentum. Anything to beat Donald Trump, but I’m not gonna go out and aggressively campaign for her or anything like that.”
“But you would vote for Joe Biden?” Collins asked.
“Over Donald Trump? In a heartbeat,” Kinzinger replied. “To me, that’s not even a question I would have to wrestle with. That wouldn’t even be to me something that I would almost feel sick to do. Like, it is literally a decision at that moment between, do you believe in a functioning democracy or do you not? And I think that’s the only thing on the ballot.”
Trump is currently facing 91 criminal counts in four jurisdictions. In two cases, he is being prosecuted for his attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election, which he falsely claimed was rigged against him.
