Former Trump Adviser Tells Fox News: If Denmark Won’t ‘Defend’ Greenland from Russia, U.S. Could Merge it With Alaska

Former Trump administration National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien laid out a scenario in which President-elect Donald Trump could force Denmark to sell Greenland to the US on Sunday.

On Sunday Morning Futures on Fox News, guest host Jason Chaffetz noted Trump had stirred the foreign policy pot with comments about annexing Canada, retaking the Panama Canal, and buying Greenland – which is not for sale.

After being asked about the comments, O’Brien compared Trump to Ronald Reagan and commented the incoming president is looking ahead at coming global conflicts.

O’Brien told Chaffetz that Denmark was strategically important and that he would welcome the kingdom to pay to defend the island. But he said if the Danes were unwilling to do so, it could become part of Alaska.

“Well, the latest is Greenland is a highway from the Arctic all the way to North America,” O’Brien added:

The Arctic is going to be a pathway that maybe – maybe even cuts down on the usage of the Panama Canal. And the Russians and Chinese are all over the Arctic. Now, the Danes gathered, the Kingdom of Denmark owns Greenland, and they’ve got an obligation to defend Greenland. And so President Trump said, if you don’t defend Greenland, we’ll buy it and we’ll defend it, but we’re not going to defend it for free and like, you know, and not develop Greenland and not extract the minerals and oil and resources of Greenland.

And while we defend Denmark – the king of Denmark becomes even wealthier. Denmark is now on the front lines of the war against Russia and China. They’re there at the Baltic states like Poland, because of their vast territory in Greenland. And so they’ve got to defend Greenland. And if they can’t defend it, we’re going to have to and we’re not going to do it for free.

O’Brien said he welcomed Denmark to fund the defense of Greenland but said, “Or they can they can pay us to do it and we’ll do it.” He concluded:

But they can cover the cost of the fence. Or if they don’t want to do either those things, they can they can let us buy Greenland from and Greenland can become part of Alaska. I mean, the native people in Greenland are very closely related to the people of Alaska, and we’ll make it a part of Alaska, but they can’t have it. The US can’t defend it for nothing. And the days of the U.S. taxpayer defending Western Europe and kingdoms in Europe and defending their empire for nothing, those days are over.
