President-elect Donald Trump suggested the United States should purchase Greenland after appointing PayPal co-founder Ken Howery as his U.S. ambassador to Denmark.
During Trump’s first-term in office he expressed a desire for the U.S. to buy the large island. His remarks resulted in a state trip to Denmark being canceled after Danish officials said it was not for sale.
Historically, the Kingdom of Denmark has held Greenland in its colonies since 1721. Denmark became the official owner in 1921 but granted Greenland home rule in 1979.
Trump made the announcement on Truth Social while praising the Silicon Valley entrepreneur as his pick to represent U.S. interests in Denmark.
“I am pleased to announce Ken Howery as my choice for United States Ambassador to the Kingdom of Denmark,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Ken is a World renowned entrepreneur, investor, and public servant, who served our Nation brilliantly during my First Term as U.S. Ambassador to Sweden, where he led efforts to increase Defense, Security, and Economic Cooperation between our Countries.”

He added, “As a Co-Founder of PayPal and venture capital fund, Founders Fund, Ken turned American Innovation and Tech leadership into Global success stories, and that experience will be invaluable in representing us abroad. For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity.”
Trump’s latest comments regarding the purchase of Greenland come a day after the president-elect called on Panama to lower fees for U.S. ships moving through the Panama Canal.
