Don Lemon Says ‘MAGA Folks’ Were the Ones Who ‘Painted CNN as Liberal’: ‘I Don’t Think We Were Left-Leaning’
Don Lemon said “MAGA folks” painted CNN as “liberal” when he worked there because they told the “truth” about former President Donald Trump.
Lemon joined Dan Abrams, founder of Mediaite, on NewsNation on Wednesday following a brief return to his former network as a guest. Lemon is currently promoting his book I Once Was Lost.
Abrams noted Lemon praised CNN as a network in his book, and he asked whether he believes it is “left-leaning” as Trump and many of his supporters have long claimed.
Lemon wouldn’t comment on the network’s current state as he said he doesn’t watch it, but he denied the network was ever left-leaning while he worked there.
“I don’t think that we were left-leaning. I think that we were pointing out the truth when I was there about Donald Trump and MAGA, and when the facts aren’t on your side, what do you do? You pound the table, or you criticize the people who are calling you are stating facts,” he said. “And so that’s what Donald Trump did. That’s what the MAGA folks did, and they painted CNN as liberal because we were pointing out facts. So I don’t think that we were particularly liberal. Are there some people there who are liberal, absolutely, some who are conservative, absolutely.”
During an August interview with CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, who once was a co-host with Lemon, late night host Stephen Colbert earned a laugh from his audience he didn’t expect after casually referring to CNN as “objective.”
Lemon claimed if Republicans received more criticism or pushback, it was due to many of their shifting views on Trump when he first ran for president, with many moving from opposing him to fiery supporters.
The former CNN host said his former network still “felt like home” when he returned as a guest this week, but he does not see a permanent return in the future.
“I never say never, but I do not believe that it’s in the cards for me to go back to CNN,” he said.
