House Bursts Into Applause When House Clerk Announces Matt Gaetz Won’t Return to Congress
Some House lawmakers started celebrating when it was announced former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) would not be joining the 119th Congress.
After being selected by President-elect Donald Trump to lead the Department of Justice, Gaetz announced his resignation from the House. However, allegations of sexual misconduct with a minor tanked Gaetz’s chances and he eventually dropped out of the nomination process.
On Friday, the Democrats in the House chamber laughed and applauded as the House clerk read into the record a letter officially confirming Gaetz does not plan on returning to Congress. Gaetz had teased a possible return to Congress as he officially resigned from the last Congress and had won reelection to the incoming Congress. He had posted to X he would like to return to the House to reveal the sex scandals of his colleagues as a kind of revenge.
