This 2015 SNL Skit On Families Dealing With Political Division On Thanksgiving Could Have Been Written for 2024
A pre-2016 election Saturday Night Live skit about a family grappling with divisive political issues over Thanksgiving dinner went viral on social media Thursday, and it was as relatable after the 2024 election as it was nine years ago.
In a November 2015 segment, the show presented a fictional family screaming at the table about everything from Syrian refugees to police brutality to a grandmother (Kate McKinnon) commenting she had seen “two transgendereds” at an airport.
The skit’s dialogue also nailed the subtle nuances of traditions that force people who don’t see much of each other together for an annual meal and featured one dialogue on interracial relationships that the show’s writers and cast members threaded the needle on.
“I have a question for you. Why do your friends keep antagonizing the police?” a character played by Aidy Bryant asked a character played by Jay Pharoah.
Cecily Strong, whose character had brought Pharoah to dinner, responded, “Why would you ask my boyfriend that?”
“Well, I’m just trying to get to know Jamal,” said Bryant.
Pharaoh replied, “My name is Andrew.”
The fictional family’s every attempt at breaking bread was interrupted by constant bickering. However, each time the screaming started, Adele’s smash hit “Hello” briefly united everyone at the table.
Matthew McConaughey also broke out his best impression of Adele in the skit, which eventually devolved into a parody of the song’s music video.
One person who shared a clip of the skit on X commented, “this adele SNL thanksgiving skit from Trump 1.0 (2015) is still relevant & could’ve run this week.”
Another person who came across the video commented, “How is this NINE years ago?”
