Dana Carvey Rips His Own Elon Musk Routine After Musk Smacks SNL as ‘Dying’ and ‘Out of Touch’

Dana Carvey admitted he struggled to come up with an accurate impersonation of Elon Musk on a Friday podcast in which he also said he would return to Saturday Night Live next month.

Carvey portrayed the billionaire Tesla and SpaceX CEO on Nov. 9 on the show just days after President-elect Donald Trump secured a second White House term.

During that episode, cast members opened the show with a gloomy segment in which they all expressed fear about what Trump might put his political enemies through.

They then all congratulated him on his win and joked they had all been in his corner from the very beginning:

Carvey, as Musk, made a cameo in the skit, which later caught the attention of the tech mogul.

In response to a clip of the segment posted on his social media platform, the Trump booster commented, “SNL has been dying slowly for years, as they become increasingly out of touch with reality. Their last-ditch effort to cheat the equal airtime requirements and prop up Kamala before the election only helped sink her campaign further.”

Musk also replied to a tweet with screenshots of Carvey wearing a “gothic” black MAGA hat in the skit, writing, “They are so mad that @realDonaldTrump won.”

Friday, Carvey admitted on his Superfly podcast with David Spade that he struggled to come up with an accent for Musk.

“I can’t do Elon Musk very well,” Carvey told Spade. “But I can do something that sounds not like anything. He has an incredible accent — South Africa via Canada, via Pennsylvania. It’s almost like, it’s a little bit of Australian in there, a little bit of British, but he’s not totally that.”

Carvey did not address Musk’s criticism of SNL directly but did disclose he would return to the show in December.
