President-elect Donald Trump and his former Vice President Mike Pence greeted one another for what is believed to be the first time since January 2021 — just a few days after the chants of “Hang Mike Pence!” by Trump’s most extremist supporters at the Capitol.
The greeting occurred just minutes before President Jimmy Carter’s state funeral was set to begin at the National Cathedral.
Trump approached the pew where former Vice President Al Gore was also seated, and after shaking hands with President Bill Clinton’s VP, he appeared to convivially shake hands with Pence.
“We see President-elect Trump and First Lady Melania Trump at the National Cathedral right now,” CNN’s Jake Tapper described the events. “We have seen I think this is the first president that we’ve seen come into the room. We are still waiting, of course, for Bush and Clinton and Obama as well. There is Donald Trump and Mike Pence. Al Gore, the former Vice President Pence and Trump.”
“It’s the first time they have seen each other since January 2021,” Tapper added. “A lot of tension between the two men and. It didn’t look particularly warm just now.”
