NewsNation anchor Dan Abrams announced that he’ll be leaving as host of his nightly program on the network in early February. Abrams said he will still appear on NewsNation in some capacity, just not hosting a nightly show.

The media entrepreneur and veteran legal analyst said on Thursday that he needed “to be practical about what it’s possible to do every day,” after over three years hosting a prime time show.

In addition to NewsNation, he serves as CEO of Mediaite and behemoth Law&Crime, and is the founder of upstart fine spirits media company Bottle Raiders. He is also chief legal analyst for ABC News, host on SiriusXM’s POTUS Channel, and host of On Patrol:Live.

In a statement announcing his departure, Abrams recalled how his initial involvement in 2021 with NewsNation — the network he said has become “the fairest cable news channel out there” — did not involve an on-air role. He said a conversation with NewsNation president Sean Compton revealed a “shared vision” for “compelling, smart, but politically agnostic news coverage” in an industry often starved of it.

Soon, the idea for Abrams’s own show took flight. “Now more than three years later, this show and network have been everything Sean, my day-to-day boss Michael Corn, and their boss Nexstar chairman Perry Sook promised,” Abrams said.

In his statement, the host took pride in independent watchdog Ad Fontes Media pinning Dan Abrams Live as “dead center” on

the media bias chart, a credit to their efforts to avoid partisan cheerleading.

“With the help of an amazing production team, I’m incredibly proud of the show we have done day in and day out,” he added. “Three years after this really unexpected opportunity, I’ve reached the point where it’s impossible to keep devoting the time needed for this show while also running and growing my other businesses,” Abrams lamented.

Abrams previewed new projects on the horizon, including the expansion of Law&Crime and Mediaite, which he announced is set to launch a major YouTube platform early next year. Likewise, Bottle Raiders, Abrams’s newest venture, is looking to establish itself as the “largest fine liquors media company in the country.”

Signing off, he concluded: “I will miss it. I know I will… but I also need to be practical. More to come.”

NewsNation is expected to announce his replacement early next year.
