Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Trolls Trump With ‘América Mexicana’ Proposal: ‘Sounds Pretty!’
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum countered President-elect Donald Trump’s proposal that the Gulf of Mexico should be renamed the “Gulf of America” with an idea of her own, that the western United States be called “América Mexicana.”
Trump sparked backlash this week with his “Gulf of America” rebranding as well as, once again, pitching some of his other ideas — including about Canada become the “51st state” and Greenland and the Panama Canal being ceded to the U.S.
During a press conference on Wednesday, Sheinbaum mocked Trump’s suggestion to rebrand the Gulf of Mexico, calling the proposal “absurd.”
“Obviously, the Gulf of Mexico is recognized by the United Nations,” she said.
Behind her, the president turned to a historical map of territory controlled by Mexico before the 19th century Mexican-American War that are now part of the U.S.. The territory ceded in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo covered the present-day states California, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, portions of Arizona and Colorado, and parts of Oklahoma, Kansas, and Wyoming.
For the next one—why don’t we call this Mexican America? It sounds nice, doesn’t it? Right? Since 1607, the Apatzingán constitution was for Mexican America. So, let’s call it Mexican America. It sounds pretty, right?
Sheinbaum continued to troll Trump further.
I believe yesterday President Trump was misinformed, with all due respect, to President Trump, because I think they told him that Felipe Calderón and García Luna were still governing Mexico, but no, in Mexico, the people govern.
