President-elect Donald Trump lobbed rhetorical bombs at Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) Thursday afternoon amid the ongoing budget battle with another debt ceiling deadline looming, threatening a primary challenge and denouncing the Texas congressman as an obstructionist and “just another ambitious guy, with no talent.”

The comments from Trump were posted on his Truth Social account in the wake of House Republicans pulling a stopgap funding bill on Wednesday. The continuing resolution that Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) introduced on Tuesday was a 1,500 page bill that would have avoided the government shutdown that will begin on Dec. 21 if nothing new is passed, but the bill was swarmed with fierce opposition from Trump, Elon Musk, and other MAGA-aligned Republicans.

Earlier Wednesday, Trump had posted threats of primary challenges for any Republican who was “stupid” enough to support Johnson’s bill.

Roy, who represents an Austin-area district, was also critical of the bill and posted multiple tweets that urged other members of Congress to vote against it, including a clip of his appearance on Neil Cavuto’s Fox Business program, in which he advocated for rejecting the 1,500 page bill and instead vote for a CR that would fund the government through March and would include disaster relief funds to help with hurricane recovery in North Carolina.

Trump wrote two posts attacking Roy:

The very unpopular “Congressman” from Texas, Chip Roy, is getting in the way, as usual, of having yet another Great Republican Victory – All for the sake of some cheap publicity for himself. Republican obstructionists have to be done away with. The Democrats are using them, and we can’t let that happen. Our Country is far better off closing up for a period of time than it is agreeing to the things that the Democrats want to force upon us. Biden is President, and it’s his obligation to properly lead. We’re there to do the right thing, and we can’t agree with what Biden and the Democrats are demanding. Weak and ineffective people like Chip have to be dismissed as being utterly unknowledgeable as to the ways of politics, and as to Making America Great Again. Put “America First,” and go for the Victory, even if it means shutting the Government down for a period of time. We had an overwhelming Victory just four weeks ago, and we’re not going to let the Democrats forget it so quickly!

Chip Roy is just another ambitious guy, with no talent. By the way, how’s Bob Good doing? I hope some talented challengers are getting ready in the Great State of Texas to go after Chip in the Primary. He won’t have a chance!

Roy responded to Trump in a tweet, writing, “My position is simple – I am not going to raise or suspend the debt ceiling (racking up more debt) without significant & real spending cuts attached to it. I’ve been negotiating to that end. No apologies.”

The congressman tagged Trump, Johnson, incoming Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD), and the Freedom Caucus account.

Mediaite reached out to Roy for comment but did not receive a response.
