President-elect Donald Trump celebrated the resignation of Canadian finance minister Chrystia Freeland on Monday, branding her “totally toxic” and claiming she would “not be missed.”

“The Great State of Canada is stunned as the Finance Minister resigns, or was fired, from her position by Governor Justin Trudeau,” wrote Trump in a post on Truth Social. “Her behavior was totally toxic, and not at all conducive to making deals which are good for the very unhappy citizens of Canada. She will not be missed!!!”

Freeland – who the New York Times reported “had been helping lead Canada’s response to the incoming Trump administration” – resigned on Monday in a scorching letter to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

“On Friday, you told me you no longer want me to serve as your Finance Minister and offered me another position in the Cabinet,” wrote Freeland. “Upon reflection, I have concluded that the only honest and viable path is for me to resign from the Cabinet.”

She continued:

For the past number of weeks, you and I have found ourselves at odds about the best path forward for Canada. Our country today faces a grave challenge. The incoming administration in the United States is pursuing a policy of aggressive economic nationalism, including a threat of 25 per cent tariffs. We need to take that threat extremely seriously. That means keeping our fiscal powder dry today, so we have the reserves we may need for a coming tariff war. That means eschewing costly political gimmicks, which we can ill afford and which make Canadians doubt that we recognize the gravity of the moment. That means pushing back against ‘America First’ economic nationalism with a determined effort to fight for capital and investment and the jobs they bring.

Last month, Trump pledged to impose a 25% tariff on all products entering the United States from Canada.

After Trudeau reportedly told Trump that such tariffs would devastate Canada’s economy, Trump floated the idea of Canada becoming the 51st state, with Trudeau as its governor.

“It was a pleasure to have dinner the other night with Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada,” mocked Trump in a Truth Social post last month. “I look forward to seeing the Governor again soon so that we may continue our in-depth talks on Tariffs and Trade, the results of which will be truly spectacular for all!”
