New Jersey Mayor Tells Harris Faulkner Fire Dept. Instructed to ‘Wear Hazmat Suits’ If Mysterious Drone Falls Out of the Sky
The mayor of Belleville, New Jersey told Fox News’ Harris Faulkner on Friday that his fire department “has been instructed to make sure they wear hazmat suits” if one of the mysterious drones circling the skies over his township were to fall to the earth.
Michael Melham told The Faulkner Focus that he and his Office of Emergency Management (OEM) team had just been briefed “by the state” before he made it to set.
“On the way here I was on the phone with my OEM team, and we now have guidance coming from the state. And that guidance does say two different things: First of all, if there is a downed drone in our vicinity, we are immediately to call the bomb squad of our county. And second, our fire department has been instructed to make sure they wear hazmat suits,” Melham said.
The statement caused Faulkner to exclaim, “So, if something falls out of the sky that people have seen and some of these things are as big as an S.U.V., If that happens, you’re to treat this more than a plane crash? You’re to treat this like an attack on the homeland?”
“That is correct,” Melham replied, “because they are not sure if there’s a payload or not. And, that’s what we were told during our briefing on Wednesday.”
Faulkner read social media posts by residents vowing to “now just have to take matters into their own hands if the government is refusing to act.”
“‘A good shotgun will fix that problem,'” Faulkner read. “Another, ‘Semi-automatic 3-inch magnum, double-zero, buck full-choke.'”
After discussing the theory of whether an Iranian “mothership” was with the drones, Faulkner asked, “What happens if somebody does shoot one of these down? How does the law look at that?”
Melham responded, “Well, we were advised to make sure we tell our residents that that is not lawful. Drones are considered aircraft and, F.A.A., you cannot shoot an aircraft in New Jersey. We’re being advised to tell residents not to shoot them down.”
