Karine Jean-Pierre Responds to Trump’s Complaint About Flags Flying At Half-Staff to Honor Jimmy Carter
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre responded to President-elect Donald Trump’s recent complaints about flags flying at half-staff on inauguration day.
On January 20th, flags above U.S. government buildings will fly at half-staff in order to honor former President Jimmy Carter who died last week at the age of 100.
Recently, Trump told his followers on Truth Social that “no American can be happy” about the flag flying at half-staff during his inauguration. The president-elect also bashed Democrats for being “giddy” about the flag being at half-staff while he takes the oath of office.
“In any event, because of the death of President Jimmy Carter, the Flag may, for the first time ever during an Inauguration of a future President, be at half mast,” Trump wrote on Friday. “Nobody wants to see this, and no American can be happy about it. Let’s see how it plays out. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
During a White House briefing on Friday, a reporter asked Jean-Pierre whether President Joe Biden would consider reversing the order to have flags flying at half-staff.
REPORTER: President Trump a little while ago today seemed to take issue with the fact that American flags will be flying. With his cooperation, considering the passing of President Carter. Is there any potential for that to not be the case?… The flags are due to be flying at half mast at the time of the inauguration, and President Trump seems to be taking issue with that. Is that a decision that the White House would consider to consider reversing or reevaluating?
JEAN-PIERRE: No.
