‘Probably’: Trump Agrees that Zuckerberg’s Pivot Is a Response to His ‘Threats’ Made Against Him
President-elect Donald Trump believes that Mark Zuckerberg’s recent pivot to a more pro-Trump position resulted from Trump’s past threats against the Meta CEO.
Zuckerberg made news Tuesday morning, announcing that Facebook and Instagram would no longer fact check in the same way they’ve moderated content over the past 7 or 8 years and rely on a community notes process similar to that Elon Musk put in place on X.
Skeptics might have seen the announcement as a cynical play by Zuckerberg to endear himself with President-Elect Trump, with whom he reportedly dined at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence. Zuckerberg faces an anti-trust trial in April so one can see reasons why he’d want to endear himself to the new Trump administration.
Meta’s $1 million campaign donation to Trump angered progressive pundits. Since then, Zuckerberg has hired Joel Kaplan, a Republican official who had criticized Facebook for censorship, to run his company’s Global Policy effort. He’s also brought UFC CEO and Trump ally Dana White to join the Meta board.
“So I watched their news conference. And I thought it was a very good news conference,” Trump said of Meta’s new head of Global Affairs, Joel Kaplan, appearance on Fox& Friends. ” I think they’ve honestly I think they’ve come a long way. Mr.. Facebook. I think they’ve come a long way. I watched it. The man was very impressive. I watched it actually. I watched it on Fox. I’m not allowed to say that.”
In the past, Trump had pledged to put Zuckerberg in prison for life over what he saw as election interference, which seemed to be what a reporter was referencing when he asked, “Do you think he’s directly responding to the threats that you have made to him in the past with promises?
“Probably,” Trump nodded. “Yeah, probably.”
And with that, we can see why Trump feels emboldened to continue to threaten major media and tech players with life imprisonment because it appears to work, at least in his mind.
