JUST IN: Trump Announces Plans to Change ‘Gulf of Mexico’ to ‘Gulf of America’

President-elect Donald Trump announced his plans to change the name of the “Gulf of Mexico” to the “Gulf of America” during an elliptical and stream-of-consciousness press conference Tuesday morning at Mar-a-Lago.

“We are going be changing — the the opposite of Biden closing everything up and getting rid of 50 to 60 trillion worth of assets — we’ll be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring,” Trump announced roughly 20 minutes into his press conference opener that covered a wide0- ranging number of topics. “That covers a lot of territory,” he added. “The Gulf of America. What a beautiful name. It is appropriate. It’s appropriate.”

Trump has long blamed Mexico for the immigration problems that the United States faces, and this announcement seems to be in line with his past rhetorical attacks on America’s largest trade partner, ally, and neighbor.

This bit of news may have caught a lot of people by surprise as there was no inkling from Trump or any public surrogates about this pro-nationalist concept — unless, of course, you follow Trump acolyte Jack Posobiec, who posted this idea roughly two and a half weeks ago:

Trump’s announcement raises immediate questions about how a presidential administration can formally change the name of a large body of water like the Gulf of Mexico. There is no word yet if Mexico intends to retaliate by insisting that Baja California gets called something else or if the Sea of Cortez name is also up for negotiation.
