‘Don’t Know What He Means By That’: Trump Ally Rick Scott Responds to His Threat of Using the Military to Take Greenland
Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) joined Fox Business host Stuart Varney on Wednesday to discuss President-elect Donald Trump’s suggestion that the U.S. should take over Canada, Greenland, and the Panama Canal.
Varney asked Scott if Trump was actually serious about the latter two, which the president-elect has argued would bolster national security.
“Mr. Senator, taking over Greenland and the Panama Canal isn’t a realistic proposal, is it? It’s just a negotiating tactic, isn’t it?” asked Varney.
“Well, it’d be pretty exciting. I mean, if you think about it and we’ve got a president now that’s going to focus on our national security,” replied the Florida Republican and close Trump ally. He added:
And if you listen to what he’s saying, I mean, it would be a great strategic asset. Greenland would be for our defense. That’s number one. And number two is the Panama Canal. If they’re not treating us fairly. I mean, that’s not fair. I mean, we built it. We paid for it. And so they, you know, they need to treat us fairly. So I’m excited that he cares about American commerce. I’m sorry. He cares about national security.
“But would you be okay with using the military?” Varney pressed, referring to Trump’s comments on Tuesday that he wouldn’t rule out a military takeover of the territory.
“I don’t know what he what he means by that. You know, the but I– here’s what I believe, it would be exciting of Greenland was part of the United States that would be great for national security and that’s number one,” Scott replied, repeating his first answer. Notably, as part of Denmark, Greenland is a NATO ally protected under Article 5.
“And number two is the Panama Canal could not be treating America worse than other countries. So, we’ll see what he what he ends up doing. But look, I care. I’m appreciative that Trump is out there trying to make America great again,” he concluded.
