Jan. 6 Cop Harry Dunn Straight-Up Tells CNN He Was ‘Betrayed By The American People’ By Electing Trump
Former Capitol Police Officer Harry Dunn told CNN anchor Sara Sidner that he felt “betrayed by the American people” when they voted to return President-elect Donald Trump to the White House.
Dunn was subjected to racist taunts as he responded to the Capitol insurrection on January 6, 2021. This week, on the fourth anniversary of that riot, Vice President Kamala Harris certified the 2024 election results — a narrow but clear victory for Trump.
On Wednesday’s edition of CNN News Central, Sidner asked Dunn — who campaigned for Harris — if he felt “betrayed” by the result:
SARA SIDNER: Want to ask you, do you feel betrayed by the American people who put Donald Trump back into office or just Donald Trump himself and some of the Republicans around him who used language like “this was just a peaceful march?”
HARRY DUNN: It’s a little bit of both.
I mean, Donald Trump is who he says he is. He is not surprising anybody, especially after four years of his past presidency. If a snake bites you, you get mad at the snake? No. That’s what a snake — the snake is supposed to bite you. But that’s who Donald Trump is.
I had more faith in the American people that they would see through and disqualify him for what happened on January 6th.
It’s always been clear that I thought the institutions of the Senate bill to convict him during his impeachment, the courts failed to convict him. The Supreme Court gave him immunity. So these institutions continue to fail us.
So I believed the American people were the last they’ll see on November the 5th. And it turns out that so many of them choose to sit this election out because it didn’t matter.
So, yeah, I can say I feel betrayed by the American people who said that it didn’t matter enough.
Donald Trump has always had his base, his loyalists. They’re there. But I thought that there were more Americans who cared about preserving the institutions and standing up for decency and what’s right.
And that includes some of the members of Congress, Kevin McCarthy, Marco Rubio and Lindsey Graham, Mitch McConnell, they sure, they showed their colors with their votes, but we thought they had a little bit of decency in them, and it turned out that they didn’t.
