Trump Straight-Up Tells New Mexican Crowd He’s There Because It’s ‘Good For My Credentials’ With Latinos Amid MSG Fallout

Former President Donald Trump bluntly told a New Mexico rally crowd he was there to improve his cred “with the Hispanic or Latino community” amid fallout from his Madison Square Garden rally.

Trump is continuing to deal with fallout and negative attention for the antics at his Madison Square Garden rally, which included comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s attention-getting joke about Puerto Rico being a “floating island of garbage” — but also other offensive remarks from other speakers and Trump. The Harris campaign has capitalized on the flap.

On Thursday, Trump held a rally in New Mexico — where even he conceded his advisers consider an unlikely place to campaign, saying they told him “You can’t win” the state.

But Trump told the crowd he was there for “one simple reason” — to shore up his “credentials with the Hispanic or Latino community” — then polled the crowd on which designation they prefer:

DONALD TRUMP: Did you hear I’m at the highest point of any Republican in history? Now we’ll get it. Okay. That’s one step.

Now I’m going to make it of any Democrat also, because I treat you much better than the Democrats and Democrats. They’re destroying your country. They’re destroying your country.

So I’m here for one simple reason. I like you very much. And it’s good for my credentials with the Hispanic or Latino community.

(CHEERS).

You know, in the East Coast, they like being called Hispanics. You know this on the West Coast, they like being called Latinos.

So poll– a fre–. Give me a free poll. You know, I don’t have to spend $300,000. First is going to be Latinos next as Hispanics. Right? Which you prefer? Latinos!

(SMATTERED CHEERS)

Uh-oh. Let me give it one more shot. Latinos.

(MUFFLED CHEERS).

Hispanics!

(CROWD ROARS).

I can’t. I can’t believe it. I had an argument on the plane back there. Where is. There it is. I had a little argument on the plane. They said, “Sir, please use the term Latino when you’re in New Mexico.”.

(JEERS).

I said. And I said, you know, I’ve always heard Hispanic. And then at some point there is a little area, but I feel more comfortable. “Sir, really you’ll be very insulting. I take a poll, it is 97% I was right. A free poll.
