Elon Musk Accused of Deleting Community Note Correcting His Latest False Election Claim
Elon Musk was accused of having a community note deleted under a tweet in which he pushed more false information regarding the election.
On Tuesday, Ian Miles Cheong — one of Musk’s biggest supporters on social media — tweeted a screenshot of a LinkedIn post from Labour Part Head of Operations Sofia Patel. In the post, Patel said “nearly 100 Labour Party staff” were heading to battleground states to campaign for Vice President Kamala Harris. Cheong called it “election interference.”
“Around a hundred UK Labour politicians are campaigning on behalf of Kamala Harris across battleground states,” Cheong said. “Isn’t this foreign election interference? Imagine if members of the Russian Duma did this.”
Musk agreed and flatly said it was illegal.
That tweet, according a screenshot taken by Zeteo writer Justin Baragona, was given a community note clarifying that it actually is legal. Included in the community note was a link to a page from the Federal Election Commission. According to FEC guidelines, foreign nationals may participate in campaign activities as uncompensated volunteers.
At the time of writing, however, the note was no longer under Musk’s post.
“And, just like that,” Baragona said in his tweet thread, “the community note with the FEC link showing it’s legal for foreign nationals to serve as campaign volunteers is gone.
“Weird how that happens.”
