Los Angeles Lakers coach JJ Redick was among the thousands of residents who lost their homes to the ongoing California wildfires, ESPN insider Shams Charania reported Thursday.
The fires — which devastated the Pacific Palisades neighborhood and other areas of LA — have claimed the lives of at least five people and destroyed more than 2,000 buildings. It is the most destructive fire outbreak in the history of Los Angeles County, and is now estimated to be costliest in U.S. history.
Among those greatly affected by the disaster are countless high-profile public figures, including James Woods, Billy Crystal, and Los Angeles Clippers star Kawhi Leonard. Days prior, Redick revealed that his family had evacuated while the fire was still in its early stages.
“Just wanna acknowledge and send thoughts and prayers to everyone in the Palisades right now,” Redick said. “It’s where I live. My family and my wife’s family — my wife’s twin sister — they’ve evacuated. I know that a lot of people are freaking out right now, including my family; and from the sound of things, with the wind coming tonight, I know a lot of are scared. So, just wanna acknowledge that, and thoughts and prayers, for sure. And hope everybody stays safe.”
On Thursday, Charania reported that the game between the Lakers and the Charlotte Hornets — scheduled for that night at the Crypto.com Arena — had been postponed. He then added that Redick’s home was destroyed in the blaze.
“Tragic fires in L.A. have impacted so many,” Charania tweeted, “including Lakers personnel such as head coach JJ Redick who lost his home.”
