House Republicans Delete Tweet Cheering on Trump’s ‘Big Dreams’ of Taking Over Canada
The official X account for the GOP-led House Committee on Foreign Affairs deleted a post sharing the New York Post’s Wednesday cover and expressing support for President-elect Donald Trump’s suggestion the U.S. should take over Canada, Greenland, and the Panama Canal.
“Our country was built by warriors and explorers. We tamed the West, won two World Wars, and were the first to plant our flag on the moon,” wrote the account, adding:
President Trump has the biggest dreams for America and it’s un-American to be afraid of big dreams.
The tweet comes days after the leadership of the committee changed from moderate Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX) to MAGA bomb thrower Rep. Brian Mast (R-FL).
Trump has repeatedly said in recent weeks that Canada should become the 51st state and has even gone so far as to refer to the Canadian prime minister as a governor.
“Many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st State. The United States can no longer suffer the massive Trade Deficits and Subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat. Justin Trudeau knew this, and resigned,” Trump wrote on Truth Social recently, adding:
If Canada merged with the U.S., there would be no Tariffs, taxes would go way down, and they would be TOTALLY SECURE from the threat of the Russian and Chinese Ships that are constantly surrounding them. Together, what a great Nation it would be!!!
Trump has also suggested that the U.S. should claim sovereignty over Greenland, which is a territory of Denmark, and the Panama Canal — a part of Panama. During a Tuesday press conference, Trump told reporters he would not rule out using military or economic coercion in order to bring these territories under U.S. control. Many observers and pundits have argued that Trump is just trolling or is pushing U.S. expansion as some kind of distraction from other issues.
